AWS & Azure Cloud Engineer

Introduction

We are looking for an experienced, hands-on (FinOps) Engineer

This role is ideal for a technically strong and data-driven professional who understands both cloud engineering and financial management. You will help improve visibility, accountability and optimisation of cloud expenditure across its AWS and Microsoft Azure environments.

You will work closely with Finance, Cloud Platform Engineering, Enterprise Architecture, Product Owners, Application Teams, Security, Risk and various business units. Your focus will be on transforming complex cloud billing and usage data into clear insights, automated controls and measurable cost-saving initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities

Cloud Cost Visibility and Allocation

  • Build and maintain reliable AWS and Azure cloud cost reporting.
  • Provide visibility of cloud expenditure by business unit, application, product, environment, platform and cost centre.
  • Improve tagging, naming conventions, account structures and metadata standards.
  • Identify untagged, incorrectly allocated, idle, orphaned or anomalous cloud resources.
  • Integrate cloud cost data from platforms such as MagicOrange, Snowflake, JDE, CMDBs, observability tools and IT financial management platforms.
  • Improve data accuracy, allocation transparency and showback reporting.

 

Cloud Cost Optimisation

  • Identify optimisation opportunities across compute, storage, databases, networking, licensing, containers and managed cloud services.
  • Implement and automate rightsizing, resource scheduling, cleanup activities, budget alerts and anomaly detection.
  • Support the management of AWS Reserved Instances, AWS Savings Plans, Azure Reservations and Azure Hybrid Benefit.
  • Develop repeatable cloud cost controls, scripts, queries, dashboards and workflow automations.
  • Work with cloud platform and application teams to incorporate cost-aware practices into architecture, landing zones, deployment pipelines and operational processes.

 

Reporting, Forecasting and Analysis

  • Develop recurring MagicOrange FinOps dashboards, allocation reports, savings reports, journal outputs and executive summaries.
  • Analyse historical expenditure, cloud demand, migration plans and architectural changes to support budgeting and forecasting.
  • Translate technical cloud cost drivers into clear business insights and practical recommendations.
  • Facilitate regular cloud cost reviews with engineering teams and business units.
  • Maintain a tracked optimisation backlog showing opportunities, owners, deadlines, implementation progress and realised savings.
  • Develop self-service reporting that enables teams to manage their own cloud consumption.

 

Governance and Compliance

  • Implement tagging policies, cost guardrails, budget thresholds and exception-management processes.
  • Support cloud financial governance, internal audits and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Assist Finance and ITFM teams with invoice reconciliation, accruals, allocation outputs and period-end reporting.
  • Monitor compliance with approved cloud commercial models and cost-management standards.
  • Contribute to FinOps maturity assessments and continuous improvement initiatives.

 

Stakeholder Enablement

  • Promote a culture of shared accountability for cloud costs.
  • Coach application and engineering teams on tagging, forecasting, optimisation and responsible cloud consumption.
  • Develop FinOps playbooks, MagicOrange runbooks, reusable dashboards, queries, knowledge articles and training material.
  • Stay informed about developments in AWS, Azure, cloud pricing and FinOps Foundation practices.

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • A relevant bachelor’s degree or similar qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, Accounting, Business, Data Analytics or a related discipline.
  • 5–8+ years’ relevant experience across FinOps, cloud engineering, cloud operations, IT financial management, infrastructure, data analytics or technology cost management.
  • Practical experience working across AWS and Microsoft Azure environments.
  • Strong experience with:
    • AWS Billing and Cost Management
    • AWS Cost Explorer and AWS Budgets
    • Azure Cost Management and Billing
    • Azure Advisor
    • Cloud tagging policies and cost allocation
    • Budget monitoring and anomaly detection
    • Cloud commitment and reservation optimisation
  • Experience developing dashboards, reports, SQL queries, scripts, integrations or workflow automation.
  • Good understanding of budgets, forecasts, accruals, cost allocation, showback, variance analysis and unit economics.
  • Experience engaging with Finance, Engineering, Architecture, Product, Security and business stakeholders in a large enterprise environment.
  • FinOps Certified Practitioner, or willingness to obtain the certification within an agreed period.

  • Infrastructure-as-Code experience.
  • One or more of the following certifications:
    • FinOps Certified Engineer
    • AWS Cloud Financial Management
    • AWS Certified Solutions Architect
    • Microsoft Azure Administrator
    • Azure cost-management-related certification

Package & Remuneration

6 month contract with the possibility of extension to 12 months.
